The 302 and related strokers (As Doug said) are a great way to go. The will make more power then you will need, just depends on how hot you do the build. The 351W's are heavier as well as have a taller deck height so the intake manifold will be higher up towards the hood line if that matters. You should be able to find all the dimensions online for both of the motors as well as the weight. Carb or FI is a money issue and time issue. A carb with an nice intake is a hook fuel line up and fire, where the EFI will require more work, plumbing and tuning to get working. Plenty of EFI systems today just depends on how much $$ you want to spend or time grafting one from a late model motor. Also the key to making power is a set of good cylinder heads with matched componets, and plenty available for the 302's (and strokers), as well as reasonable price.

351 W is not as highly regarded as built 302's -- built and stroked 302's are far more common than built 351's . As far as power levels --- how much do you want to spend? An FI 302 with twin turbos and a properly equipped bottom end can tickle 900 hp fairly easilly (not cheaply), while a naturally aspirated version should be within 400-450 hp with the right mods

hey Sandy-

i love the podcasts, and the expertise that you provide on carcast. i was wondering if you could help me decide on my next swap project. im normally a japanese 4 banger turbo guy, but i recently bought a 1977 celica gt liftback super clean without rust. just needs POWER. i was thinking a 302, since they fit without firewall or fenderwell mods and they are all over the place, and as far as a cheap mass produced v8, my top pick. i know its not that powerful a v8, but this wont be my track car, just my gt cruiser. i guess my specific question is, should i go carbed or fi? are there specific years of 302 i should look for? i also hear the 351w is only 50lbs heavier and is about the same size... what would you do?

i appreciate your time. you guys are kicking ass with the podcast.

Ha Ha, at least your making more progress than me! If I could only get the hands to make/build all this stuff at the same rate that ideas get out of my head. Glad nobody is making a video of my average day!!!!!

cheers

Hey Mr. Mac! It is in the garage behind the Sunbeam Tiger. It is on the list after the Mustang. I have too much to do on all the cars and no time or anyone to help. Hopefully can start back soon on it. I have a ton of crap to do. You must have the vibe as I just filled all the tires up with air again just last night! We had a feature on it but the audio got screwed and we will have to re-shoot. I need to make it back to work on it...

Hey Darryl -

Didn't catch this message until now. But yeah everyone is light on rotary shit these days ;) I like the rx2 and rx3 (Remind me a bit like the Datsun 610's). I think after I finish the 20 other projects on the list I would like to get a 'compact' car for the track, something like a Datsun, or RX2 or and RX3. I like the odd style and they do look hot in raced up trim.

Also thanks for supporting Bald Brian he is a good guy and glad people are helping out.

Hopefully we can find some locals with some rotary motors to bring in, I think I know of a local shop in the valley that might have some good stuff...
