Kid’s shampoo (safe for babies)

2 tsp. of any type of oil (olive, almond, jojoba, and avocado are the easiest to find)
3/4 cup of “Dr. Bronner’s Liquid Soap” (any unscented liquid castile soaps will work)
10 drops of Essential Oils (I like lavender and tea tree, but feel free to experiment and find what’s best for you and your baby)
1 cup of water (Increase gradually if it’s too soapy)
1 Spray bottle

Pour the water in to the spray bottle. Add soap and oils to the water, the oils are concentrated so a little goes a LONG way. Mix well and voila, you have homemade, chemical free shampoo. I use 4-5 sprays on shoulder length hair, this is not tear-free so keep it out of delicate eyes!

Baby Wipes Solution

1 cup of water
3 drops of Lavender Oil
2 drops of Tea Tree Oil

Combine 1 cup of water with three drops of lavender oil and two drops of tea tree oil. If you’d like to make more simply multiply the recipe to fit the volume you’re preparing.

I used to make about four cups at a time and store it in a cleaned-out glass Lemonade bottle that they sell at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, etc. or kept it in a Peri-bottle (which is what they give you to rinse off your nether regions when you leave the hospital). When you’re ready to use it, spray it onto ripped up cloths, washcloths, or (Heaven forbid!) paper towels. you can also soak cloths in the solution and keep them in an airtight food storage container.

We used natural wipes. I got tons of wipe containers for my baby shower, so when one of the nice ones with the dispenser was empty, i filled it with cloths–cut up a pair of old flannel pjs–and for the most part we just used water. my son’s skin was super sensitive to most chemicals–even some of the natural stuff, so we found if I needed more than water I used cetaphil, which I kept next to the wipe bit. Then I just washed a load of wipes with the baby clothes in hot water.

Great show! Just wanted to mention that these recipes may not be good if you have a boy. Using tea tree oils and lavender in any products applied to boys can cause gynecomastic. When my son was 2 weeks old he had mastic from extra hormones that were passed on during birth. It was a horrible and painful thing to see your baby hooked up to IVs. I would see if those things can be substituted for other oils. I am very careful not to purchase anything with lavender or tea tree oil. I have two boys and both are on the verge of puberty. They love the idea of looking at boobs, just not their own ; )))

Loved this Mommy Quickie topic! I pretty much just use baking soda and vinegar to clean my kitchen and bathroom and it’s been working out very well for the last year and some change that I’ve been doing it.

Very informative, but as a completely irrational aside, I wish Mayim would sit up straight.

Is the shampoo gentle enough to not irritate the baby’s eyes? In ad-speak – “No more tears”?
